Adele Merilien Post On: How to Love a Haitian Man

how-to-love-a-haitian-man

Since I’m a Haitian woman who is currently married to a beautiful Haitian man, I found this article and thought it was so cute because I can relate to a lot of her points although we can all agree it takes way more than that.

According to this article on   blog:

What is Love?

We can always go to Corinthians in the Bible which states that love is kind, patient, etc. I may sound sappy, but there’s one thing for sure:   I am in love with a wonderful Haitian man. From all appearances, I was told by all that I was destined to marry  a white man. At one point, I did believe it for a moment and I started to date men outside of my community. Guess what, I tried it and it didn’t work for me. I had to revert back to my cultural background.

Why I had to go back to my culture

I had a difficult time connecting with men from other cultural backgrounds. I was made to feel that I had to put on a show to ensure that I was not coming across as the stereotypical black woman who is always angry at the world. Yet, this Haitian brother brought out the real me. I was goofy, nerdy, smiley, and most importantly I was being myself. Life was never the same when my world was rocked by my ‘6’3’’ Haitian brother.

OMG!

Ladies! I was like world, hear me roar! I was all about the ultimate feminine movement, yet this fine man came into my life when I was now realizing that my career goals were not enough for me. They definitely were not keeping me warm at night. I was no longer the predator whose eyes were constantly connected to the world’s biological clock. I actually became the prey who wanted patiently for Mr. Right to find me.  The moment that I felt comfortable and secure with myself, I was able to welcome this brother into my life with open arms. We met! Our worlds collided on the first date! We lived in two different states. We were caught up in a whirlwind romance! In less than two years we were married and now expecting our first child in the same state. Can I get an Amen or Whoop, Whoop?

How to Love a Haitian Man

1. Learn how to cook mayi moulin espina (cornmeal with spinach)

Like men from many cultures, the way to their hearts is through their bellies and Haitian men are serious when it comes to their food.  You have to be able to prepare food with the same love that their mothers put in to it.  Don’t forget the steamed (poison grosel) or  fried fished, which makes a great side for mayi moulin espina.

2. Learn how to dance Kompa music

You have to know how to peze (wind) while looking like you’re motionless, but still getting your grind on.

3. Come up with a pet name

Saying cherie to him in a way that he likes;  it will leave your mark on his heart

4. Show respect for elders

Respect for elders is an integral part of Haitian culture and loving a Haitian man means you show respect not only to your family, but to his as well.

5. Learn to speak some Kreyol (Creole)

Many Haitian men can speak French, but they really like it when you can speak a little Kreyol.

Hope these tips help you bag your Haitian man! (wink)
