Snapshots: Port-au-Prince 1950’s

Haiti had a great many factories and plants in the 1950s. This photo is of a sisal plant in Port au Prince in the year 1951, producing the fiber for the United States Department of Defense. According to historical records the sisal industry in Haiti employed about 15,000 workers in Haiti, who produced at the very least 40,000 tons of fiber that the United States needed for its defense program.
