Some 200,000 immigrant truck drivers will begin to Some 200,000 immigrant truck drivers will begin to lose their commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) as they expire under a new Trump administration rule that took effect Monday, March 16.
The policy, pushed by President Trump's Department of Transportation and enforced by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), bars most non-citizen immigrants without permanent status, like asylum seekers, refugees, and DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, from getting or renewing these special "non-domiciled" CDLs needed to drive big rigs across state lines.
Existing drivers can keep working until their current license runs out (which could be months or years, depending on the expiration date), but they won't be able to renew under the new rules. Only drivers on very specific temporary visas (like H-2A farm workers, H-2B seasonal non-farm workers, or E-2 investors) can still qualify.
Trump administration officials, including Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, say the rule is about safety and fixing "integrity" problems. They point to past issues in which states issued licenses inconsistently using work permits (EADs), as well as some high-profile crashes involving foreign-born drivers in 2025. The goal is to stop unqualified or hard-to-verify drivers from operating heavy trucks on U.S. roads.
Critics call it an immigration crackdown disguised as a safety measure. Trucking companies, labor groups, and immigrant advocates warn that it will worsen the nationwide driver shortage, slow down freight delivery, and drive up prices for everything from groceries to building materials since trucks move over 70% of U.S. goods.
For affected drivers: No immediate mass firings, but as licenses expire without renewal, many could be forced out of long-haul trucking jobs they've held for years. Options are limited: switch to local/non-commercial driving, seek rare qualifying visas, or leave the industry.
Trump's team frames this as protecting American roads and prioritizing citizens/permanent residents for these critical jobs.

Travelers across the United States are facing moun Travelers across the United States are facing mounting chaos at airport security checkpoints as the partial government shutdown enters its fifth week, with hundreds of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers quitting or taking unscheduled leave due to missed paychecks.

The shutdown, which began on February 14, stems from Congress's failure to pass funding legislation for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Essential personnel, such as TSA officers, are required to continue working without immediate compensation, with back pay promised once a resolution is reached. However, the prolonged uncertainty has taken a heavy toll, with absences more than doubling and over 300 TSA agents reportedly resigning in recent weeks.

Reports from major hubs paint a grim picture: Security lines at airports such as Houston's William P. Hobby, New Orleans' Louis Armstrong International, and others have extended outside terminals, with wait times reaching two to three hours or more during peak travel periods. Spring break crowds are exacerbating the strain, prompting warnings from aviation experts about potential widespread disruptions.

Airline executives have joined the chorus of concern, with CEOs from major carriers penning an open letter to Congress urging swift action to restore pay and end the standoff. "This problem is solvable," the letter stated, emphasizing that continued delays threaten record-breaking spring travel volumes and broader economic effects.

In the meantime, passengers continue to pay airport security fees that fund TSA operations, even as the officers screening their bags go unpaid.

Advocates for federal workers warn that the situation could worsen without resolution, as more essential staff opt out and staffing shortages ripple through the aviation system. For now, travelers are advised to arrive extra early, check airport-specific wait times, and prepare for potential delays.

Leyla McCalla, the #HaitianAmerican cellist, singe Leyla McCalla, the #HaitianAmerican cellist, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, captivated audiences during the 98th Academy Awards on March 15. She joined a powerhouse ensemble for a live performance of the Oscar-nominated Best Original Song "I Lied to You" from Ryan Coogler's film Sinners.

@Leylacello is a Grammy-associated artist known for blending classical training with folk, #Haitian, Creole, and Louisiana traditions. Born to Haitian immigrant parents who were activists, she grew up immersed in diverse cultural influences, including a teenage stint living in Accra, Ghana. She studied cello performance and chamber music at New York University before busking with her cello in New Orleans' French Quarter after relocating there in 2010.

McCalla first gained wider recognition as a cellist with the Grammy Award-winning African-American string band Carolina Chocolate Drops. She is also a founding member of Our Native Daughters, a supergroup focused on Black women's contributions to American roots music. A multilingual performer, she sings in English, French, and Kreyol, and plays cello, tenor banjo, and guitar. Her sound is described as earthy yet elegant, drawing from three centuries of musical lineages while remaining deeply personal and innovative.

In the Oscars segment, McCalla performed alongside lead vocalist Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq, recreating the film's dreamlike sequence where generations of musicians converge across time. The performance emphasized music's pivotal role in the movie's storytelling and featured an impressive lineup including Brittany Howard, Shaboozey, Misty Copeland (incorporating ballet), Eric Gales, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Bobby Rush, Alice Smith, Buddy Guy, and others.

If you watched Sinners or have been rooting for Ry If you watched Sinners or have been rooting for Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan throughout their careers, you woke up this morning with a huge smile. Their historic night at the Oscars was everything fans hoped for and more.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, the groundbreaking horror allegory starring Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers navigating a blood-soaked world of vampires and racial reckoning, made history at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday night. Entering the ceremony with an unprecedented 16 nominations (the most in Oscar history, tying or surpassing previous records across major awards seasons), the film walked away with four well-deserved wins, cementing its place as one of the standout achievements of 2025 cinema.
While Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another took home Best Picture, sparking post-show debates about whether the Academy overlooked Sinners for the night’s biggest prize, Coogler’s film still dominated in key creative categories.
Best Actor - Michael B. Jordan
For his mesmerizing dual performance as the Smoke/Stack twins (Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore). This marked Jordan’s first Oscar win and made him the sixth Black actor to claim the leading actor trophy, and the first to win for portraying twins.
Best Original Screenplay - Ryan Coogler
Coogler’s sharp, genre-blending script earned him his first Oscar. He became only the second Black writer to win in this category, receiving a standing ovation as he hugged his cast onstage.
Best Original Score - Ludwig Göransson
Göransson’s haunting, atmospheric compositions, blending eerie strings, hip-hop influences, and orchestral swells, secured his third Oscar.
Best Cinematography - Autumn Durald Arkapaw
In a landmark moment, Arkapaw became the first woman ever to win Best Cinematography. Her stunning visuals, dynamic vampire action, and rich period textures brought Coogler’s vision to haunting life.
Sinners didn’t sweep the night, but its four victories after such a massive nomination haul speak volumes about its impact. The film has already been celebrated for breaking barriers in genre filmmaking, representation, and technical excellence.

#LunionSuite Update: Lawmakers from Massachusetts #LunionSuite Update: Lawmakers from Massachusetts are calling for a thorough investigation into the death of Emmanuel Damas, a 56-year-old #Haitian asylum seeker who had been living in the Boston area, after he died in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on March 2. Family members and advocates allege that an untreated toothache escalated into a fatal infection due to inadequate medical care at the Florence Correctional Center in Arizona.

Damas, who arrived in the U.S. legally through a humanitarian program for #Haitians and resided in Dorchester, Massachusetts, was detained by ICE in Boston in September 2025 following a minor assault charge. Even after posting bail on the local charge, he was transferred into federal immigration custody & moved to the Arizona facility while his asylum case was pending.

According to his brother, Presner Nelson, Damas began complaining of severe tooth pain in mid-February 2026. He reportedly informed medical staff at the facility, but received only over-the-counter pain medication and was not referred to a dentist for proper treatment. Family members say Damas was placed on life support after the infection spread, leading to complications including pneumonia and possibly sepsis. When relatives arrived in Arizona, they found him in a coma, resulting in his death on March 2.

The case has drawn sharp criticism from Massachusetts lawmakers, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey, along with Representative Ayanna Pressley. In a joint letter to federal officials, they described Damas’s death as “highly preventable” and slammed what they called ICE’s failure to provide timely medical care. They demanded answers on the medical treatment provided, broader oversight of detention facilities, and immediate steps to ensure proper healthcare for detainees.

ICE has disputed some family claims, stating that detainees receive medical screenings, access to care, and emergency treatment when needed. ICE described him in a statement as a “criminal illegal alien” facing assault charges. Damas’s death is at least the 10th and, by some counts, higher in ICE custody in 2026.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) det U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Sarahjane Ternier, the longtime partner of former North Miami Mayor Philippe Bien-Aimé and the mother of three of his children, this week. The arrest occurred on Wednesday in Miami and comes just weeks after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a civil complaint in February 2026 to revoke Bien-Aimé’s U.S. citizenship.

According to ICE officials, Ternier was taken into custody based on a final deportation order issued on July 31, 2000. She originally entered the United States on June 12, 1994, and her appeal of the deportation order was dismissed by the Board of Immigration Appeals on October 23, 2002. She is currently being held at the Broward Transitional Center in Florida and will remain in ICE custody pending removal from the country.

The detention follows federal allegations against Bien-Aimé, a #Haitian native who served as mayor of North Miami from 2019 to 2022. In a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the DOJ accuses him of using multiple identities and committing immigration fraud to obtain U.S. citizenship in 2006. Prosecutors claim Bien-Aimé first entered the U.S. illegally under the name Jean Philippe Janvier, using a fraudulent, photo-switched passport. He faced removal proceedings in 2001 but allegedly withdrew his appeal by claiming he had returned to Haiti, while remaining in the U.S.

Under his current name, Philippe Bien-Aimé, he reportedly entered into a fraudulent marriage with a U.S. citizen (deemed invalid due to bigamy, as he was already married to a Haitian citizen) to adjust his status and later naturalize. The complaint alleges he made numerous false statements during the adjustment and naturalization processes, including concealing a prior removal order. Fingerprint comparisons reportedly confirmed the two identities belong to the same person. Bien-Aimé has not been criminally charged in connection with these allegations.

Ternier’s detention appears unrelated directly to Bien-Aimé’s denaturalization proceedings but coincides with heightened scrutiny amid the case.

31-year-old Daphy Michel, a #Haitian asylum seeker 31-year-old Daphy Michel, a #Haitian asylum seeker living in Washington County, Pennsylvania, was found unresponsive at a Pittsburgh bus shelter on March 2 and later died. She was still wearing her ICE ankle monitor.
Daphy had been held in Washington County Jail on misdemeanor charges (harassment and terroristic threats) since September 2025. On February 26, a judge dismissed the charges entirely. Her brother, Carlo Michel, attended the hearing and said she appeared stable: “I saw my sister. She wasn’t having any problem.”
Instead of release, ICE took custody due to a detainer and transported her about an hour away to their Pittsburgh Enforcement and Removal Operations office. There, she was enrolled in ICE’s Alternatives to Detention program, fitted with an electronic ankle monitor, and released the same day (February 27) alone, in an unfamiliar city far from home and family, with no notification to her brother.
According to a detailed investigation by @Wtaetv’s, Carlo waited anxiously for her release from jail, expecting to pick her up. Days passed in silence. On March 2, he received a shocking call from UPMC Presbyterian Hospital asking if he recognized the name, Daphy Michel. “I replied... that it’s my sister,” he told WTAE Pittsburgh through an interpreter. He rushed to the hospital but couldn’t save her. Doctors said she suffered cardiac arrest. Port Authority Police reported maintenance workers found her shortly after 10 a.m. near the Monongahela Incline on East Carson Street; officers performed CPR, used an AED, and administered Narcan before transport.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy, with toxicology results pending. The family, supported by immigration attorney Joseph Murphy, questions why she was released alone in Pittsburgh without support or transport back to her community, especially given her reported prior mental health concerns.
ICE states they followed protocol, enrolled her in monitoring, and released her with her belongings (including a charged phone) on a sunny day with public transit available. They say her death occurred three days later and had “nothing to do” with them.

n a dramatic second day of testimony on March 12, n a dramatic second day of testimony on March 12, in the U.S. federal court in Miami, former #Haitian First Lady Martine Moïse directly implicated former President Michel Martelly and former Prime Minister Ariel Henry in connections to the July 7, 2021, assassination of her husband, President Jovenel Moïse.

Testifying as the prosecution’s key witness in the conspiracy trial of four South Florida men accused of helping orchestrate the plot, Moïse provided an emotional and graphic account of the nighttime attack at the couple’s home in Pétion-Ville, Haiti. Armed intruders stormed the residence, fatally shooting Jovenel Moïse multiple times while Martine Moïse was also wounded but survived and was later airlifted to the United States for treatment.

During cross-examination and her statements, Moïse accused Martelly, her husband’s predecessor, of ties to the killing, noting that security arrangements from his administration may have played a role. She similarly pointed to Ariel Henry, who became acting prime minister shortly after the assassination, claiming she has filed a formal complaint against him in the case. Moïse asserted that accusations against her in #Haiti (where she was indicted in 2024 for alleged complicity, charges she rejects as politically motivated) stem from the fact that “the people who killed him are now in power in Haiti.”

The trial focuses on four defendants charged with conspiracy in a plot prosecutors say was partly planned in South Florida, involving Colombian mercenaries who carried out the attack. Nearly five years after the assassination plunged Haiti into deeper instability, Moïse emphasized her ongoing pursuit of “truth and justice” for her husband.

L’Union Suite spoke exclusively with Tania Francois of CBS 4 Miami, who was in the courtroom covering the proceedings. In our interview, Francois broke down the key moments of Martine Moïse’s powerful testimony, including her tearful descriptions of the attack, the graphic details shared on the stand, and the direct accusations against prominent Haitian political figures. Readers can find the full interview on our page.
