HBO Max’s “The Pitt” Season 2 Episode 9 stands out HBO Max’s “The Pitt” Season 2 Episode 9 stands out as one of the most emotionally raw and socially relevant hours of the series so far. During a grueling Independence Day shift disrupted by a cyberattack, the show focuses on 12-year-old Jude Augustin, who loses two fingers in a cherry bomb accident. What seems like a routine holiday injury soon reveals a much deeper crisis: his older sister Chantal, his legal guardian, discloses that their parents were deported to Haiti nine months earlier after a routine immigration hearing. As a U.S.-born sibling left behind, Chantal had to drop out of college, work full-time, and raise her brother alone.

Haitian American actress Sasha Compère gives a powerful, authentic performance as Chantal. She movingly portrays the exhaustion, fear, and resilience of a young woman forced into an overwhelming role. Her vulnerable line.

This episode’s importance goes far beyond the ER. For the Haitian community, it’s a rare and respectful depiction of the real struggles many families face: sudden parental deportation, the heavy responsibility placed on older siblings, constant fear of social services intervention, financial strain, and the identity challenges for American-born children disconnected from Haiti. In a time of heated immigration debates and ongoing policy changes, the storyline feels especially timely and necessary. It humanizes the human cost of family separation, giving visibility to experiences that are often overlooked or politicized.

The Augustin family arc blends naturally with the rest of the episode’s high-stakes drama, medical errors under pressure.

Following the episode, @Sasha_Compere took to social media to express her gratitude. She shared how honored she felt that The Pitt included this storyline, and how meaningful it was to portray and share the perspective of what so many immigrant families are currently experiencing in the U.S.

Thanks to Sasha Compère’s standout work and the show’s thoughtful approach, this hour stands as one of the season’s most impactful.

Cap-Haïtien was brought to a near standstill on Th Cap-Haïtien was brought to a near standstill on Thursday, as residents continued multi-day protests against the poor state of road infrastructure and widespread unsanitary conditions. Demonstrators erected barricades, burned tires, and blocked key arteries, including National Route No. 1, forcing school closures, disrupting public transport, and halting much of the city’s economic activity.
Protests erupted on Monday, April 27, and intensified through the week, particularly in neighborhoods such as Vertières, Madeline, Champin, Sainte Philomène, and areas near the CACH. Protesters set tires, debris, and vehicles on fire across the roads, severely limiting traffic on National Route No. 1, a vital corridor linking the southern entrance of the city to the urban center and serving historical sites such as Vertières, Barrière-Bouteille, Lakou Breda, and Bois-Caïman.
Residents are demanding urgent government intervention, including full rehabilitation of deteriorated roads riddled with potholes, the clearing of clogged gutters and drainage canals, and improved sanitation to prevent recurrent flooding. Many highlighted how heavy rains have exacerbated the crisis, turning streets into muddy quagmires and flooding homes.
In response, the Haitian government announced and deployed an inter-ministerial emergency mission to the North Department on April 29, under the instructions of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. The mission, involving the Ministry of Public Works, Transport & Communications, & the Ministry of the Environment, aims to assess infrastructure needs, local governance, civil security, and environmental issues on the ground.
A government delegation, including Minister of the Interior Paul Antoine Bien-Aimé, Minister of the Environment Valéry Fils-Aimé, and Minister of Public Works Joseph Almathe Pierre Louis, visited Cap-Haïtien the day before the April 30 protests to assess the situation and pledge rapid interventions.
National Route No. 1 remains a critical lifeline for the region, and its ongoing partial impassability continues to affect travel and commerce between southern areas and the city center.

As May marks Haitian Heritage Month, congressional As May marks Haitian Heritage Month, congressional candidate Dale Holness joined the City of Tamarac to celebrate the rich contributions of the Haitian people to American history and the enduring strength of the Haitian diaspora.
In a heartfelt message, Holness highlighted Haiti’s pivotal role in the founding and expansion of the United States. He noted the bravery of Haitian soldiers who fought alongside American forces during the Siege of Savannah in the Revolutionary War, as well as the profound impact of the Haitian Revolution, which helped make the Louisiana Purchase possible.
“The United States owes a profound debt of gratitude to Haiti,” Holness stated. “From the battlefield to the ballot box, the spirit and history of the Haitian people are deeply woven into the American story.”
@Daleholness emphasized the importance of standing with Haiti today, just as Haiti stood with the United States throughout history. He reaffirmed his strong advocacy for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals, stressing that families deserve the security and stability to build their lives without fear.
The event also served as a special tribute to two icons of Haitian culture and global influence: music legend Wyclef Jean and his sister, philanthropist and artist Melky Jean. Holness described the pair as “absolute legends” whose artistic achievements and dedication to service perfectly embody the resilience, talent, and brilliance of the Haitian diaspora.

Stephen Bowen, 40, entered a not guilty plea to fi Stephen Bowen, 40, entered a not guilty plea to first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence in the death of his wife, Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer.

Bowen’s attorneys filed the written plea earlier this month. On Tuesday, April 28, a Broward County judge formally accepted it during a brief court appearance. Bowen appeared in court shackled and wearing a “max custody” inmate jumpsuit, though his arraignment was waived.

According to authorities, Metayer, 38, was found dead in the couple’s Coral Springs home on April 1, following a welfare check. Police say Bowen shot her with a shotgun, then wrapped her body in blankets and garbage bags. He allegedly confessed to a family member before his arrest in Plantation. A grand jury later indicted Bowen on the murder charge. He remains held without bond.

The tragic loss has deeply shaken the Coral Springs community, with residents and city leaders mourning the dedicated public servant who served as vice mayor. Tributes continue to pour in as the community remembers her contributions and service.

Spirit Airlines, the pioneering ultra-low-cost car Spirit Airlines, the pioneering ultra-low-cost carrier known for its bright yellow planes, rock-bottom fares, and à la carte fees, announced today that it is winding down all operations effective immediately after 34 years in business.

In a statement posted on its website early Saturday morning, the airline said: “It is with great disappointment that on May 2, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately. To our Guests: all flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available.”

The shutdown comes after the airline failed to secure a $500 million government bailout from the Trump administration and could not reach a deal with bondholders amid its second bankruptcy filing in less than two years. Soaring jet fuel prices linked to geopolitical tensions, including the U.S.-Iran conflict, delivered the final blow to the financially strained carrier.

Spirit, which employed around 17,000 people and operated hundreds of daily flights, revolutionized budget travel by offering some of the cheapest tickets in the U.S. market, though it often charged extra for baggage, seats, and even water.

What Travelers Need to Know:

All flights canceled: Passengers should not go to the airport. Spirit’s booking site now displays a wind-down notice.
Refunds: Bookings paid by credit card will receive automatic refunds. Contact your card issuer if needed.

Rebooking help: Other airlines, including Frontier, are assisting stranded passengers and offering options for future travel.

Impact: Thousands of travelers are affected today, with crews being assisted in returning home.

The airline expressed pride in its legacy: “We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 33 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.”

This marks the end of an era for one of America’s most disruptive budget airlines and the latest casualty in a turbulent period for the industry. More updates as the story develops.

Pras Michel, the Grammy-winning rapper and foundin Pras Michel, the Grammy-winning rapper and founding member of the groundbreaking hip-hop group the Fugees, has begun serving a 14-year federal prison sentence after reporting to the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Arizona, on Thursday, April 30. The 53-year-old artist turned himself in as ordered following multiple court-approved delays to his surrender date.
Michel’s spokesperson, Erica Dumas, released the following statement:
“Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice. Pras honors the legal process as he reports to begin his sentence. The Foreign Agents Registration Act-related charges that led to his conviction are being vigorously contested on appeal, and his legal team believes the record will show that his rights were violated and the truth was obscured. This chapter is difficult, but it is not his final one.”
The conviction stems from a 2023 federal trial where Michel was found guilty on 10 felony counts. Prosecutors alleged he played a central role in an international scheme tied to Malaysian financier Jho Low and the massive 1MDB corruption scandal. According to court documents, Michel helped funnel more than $865,000 in foreign funds into Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, contributions that were illegal because they came from overseas sources. He was also convicted of acting as an unregistered foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), money laundering, conspiracy, making false statements, and witness tampering. The charges further included efforts to influence U.S. officials and investigations involving Low and the Chinese telecom giant ZTE.
U.S. District Judge Kollar-Kotelly sentenced Michel to 14 years in prison in November 2025, along with 3 years of supervised release and the forfeiture of tens of millions of dollars. His legal team has maintained throughout that he was not aware of the full scope of the alleged scheme and that his constitutional rights were violated during the investigation and trial. Michel’s attorneys have indicated that the appeal process will now proceed within the prison system.

Spirit Airlines is reportedly preparing to shut do Spirit Airlines is reportedly preparing to shut down, with sources indicating the budget carrier could cease operations as soon as Saturday, according to multiple reports building on The Wall Street Journal and other outlets.

The ultra-low-cost airline, already in its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in less than two years, is facing severe cash shortages exacerbated by jet fuel prices that have roughly doubled amid the U.S.-Iran conflict. Creditors have been exploring liquidation options, and earlier rescue talks with the Trump administration appear to have stalled or faced major obstacles.

While Spirit continues to sell tickets and operate flights for the moment, insiders warn that a sudden halt could come with minimal notice, potentially stranding passengers and putting thousands of jobs at risk.

What This Means for Travelers (Per CBS News’ Peter Greenberg)
CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg has urged passengers not to rely on Spirit’s survival: “You can’t count on Spirit being around if the fuel continues to spike. Cause they don’t have a plan B.

Immediate Recommendations for Spirit Passengers:
-Keep your Spirit ticket, but immediately buy a refundable backup ticket on another airline for the same route.
- Check your flight status obsessively over the next 48–72 hours.
- If Spirit cancels, you should be entitled to a full refund — but expect chaos rebooking during busy travel periods.
- Fares on competing routes could rise quickly if the low-cost leader disappears.

A full shutdown would mark the end of one of America’s most aggressive discounters, likely leading to higher prices for budget travelers nationwide and route reductions in leisure markets.

The situation remains fluid, with last-ditch negotiations possibly still underway. Travelers with Spirit bookings in the coming days are strongly advised to have alternative plans ready.

This is a developing story. Check Spirit’s official channels or your booking confirmation for the latest updates.
