Stephen “Kiki” Ramos’ journey to the Argentina national team is about much more than football. It’s a story of survival, resilience, and the power of a second chance.
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 2009, Ramos was living in an orphanage when the devastating 2010 earthquake struck the country. He survived the disaster and, before his first birthday, was adopted by an Argentine family who gave him a new home and a new beginning thousands of miles away.
Now 17 years old, Ramos has reached another major milestone. After impressing in the youth academy at Vélez Sarsfield, the talented forward has been called up to Argentina’s U-17 national team, becoming the first player born in Haiti to receive a call-up to represent Argentina at any national team level.
The invitation is a reward for years of hard work. Ramos has emerged as one of Vélez’s brightest young prospects, earning recognition for his speed, finishing ability, and consistent performances at the youth level. His development caught the attention of Argentina U-17 coach Diego Placente, who included him in the squad as the team prepares for upcoming international competitions.
While Ramos will wear Argentina’s colors on the international stage, his achievement is also a proud moment for many Haitians around the world. His story reflects the strength of a child who survived one of Haiti’s darkest moments and grew into a young athlete capable of making history.
