Haitian Workers Are Losing Jobs Across Florida as Businesses Struggle to Fill the Gaps

The end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians is now being felt beyond immigration offices and courtrooms. Florida businesses are dealing with the loss of workers who had become part of their everyday operations.

Since Haitian TPS-based work authorization ended on July 27, some employers have had to suspend or let go of employees who had been working legally in the U.S. for years. The impact is being reported in home care, health care, restaurants, hospitality and other service industries.

For South Florida, the change is especially significant. Haitian workers are a major part of the region’s workforce, and health-care leaders have warned that losing experienced Haitian employees could put additional pressure on an industry already struggling to fill positions.

Restaurants are feeling the change as well. In Key West, one restaurant suspended six Haitian employees after they lost authorization to work. In Miami, Chef Creole owner Wilkinson Sejour also reported losing Haitian employees following the end of TPS.

Some businesses are now trying to cover the gaps by offering overtime, recruiting new workers or using staffing agencies. But replacing someone who has spent years learning a job isn’t always as simple as putting another person on the schedule.

For Haitian workers, the impact is personal. Many have spent years building careers, raising families and becoming part of the communities where they live. Losing work authorization can mean losing a paycheck, health coverage and the stability they worked hard to build.

And for Florida businesses, the question is becoming harder to ignore:

Who fills the jobs left behind?

From caregivers helping seniors to restaurant workers serving customers, the loss of Haitian TPS workers is becoming a workforce issue that Florida communities are watching closely.
