In a landmark verdict, a Miami-Dade County jury has awarded $100 million to former Florida State Senator Daphne Campbell and her family in a wrongful death lawsuit following the tragic killing of her 23-year-old son, Jason Campbell. The young father of three was fatally shot while s
leeping in a condo at the Monte Carlo Condominium complex in Biscayne Gardens on June 1, 2021. The jury determined that the tragedy was the result of gross negligence and critical security failures by the property’s management and security contractors.
Court documents reveal that the shooter, Lakoria Shamece Washington—the ex-girlfriend of Jason’s partner—unlawfully entered the gated condo complex, bypassing the security guard post without being questioned or stopped. Armed and undetected, Washington made her way into the unit where Jason was sleeping and fatally shot him. She was arrested weeks later by U.S. Marshals and, in July 2025, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. She remains incarcerated at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County.
In response to her son’s death, Daphne Campbell filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2022 against the Monte Carlo Condominium Association, property management company AKAM On-Site Inc., private security firm EMS Protective Group, and the tenant of the unit where the shooting occurred. The suit argued that the lack of basic safety protocols and negligence on the part of those responsible for securing the premises directly enabled the intruder to carry out the killing.
After a lengthy legal battle, the jury returned its decision on July 15, 2025. The verdict found all four defendants liable, with the largest share of responsibility—57%—assigned to AKAM On-Site Inc. due to major lapses in property oversight and management. The Monte Carlo Condominium Association and EMS Protective Group were each found 18% at fault, while the tenant of the unit was assigned 7% of the blame.
The $100 million in damages marks one of the most significant awards in recent Florida history related to premises liability. The compensation includes $25 million each for Daphne and Hubert Campbell, Jason’s parents, for pain and suffering, and $50 million to be divided among Jason’s three children for the profound loss of their father.
The verdict is not only a measure of justice for the Camp
bell family but also a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of failed security systems and negligence in residential communities.
