Rep. Jared Moskowitz Honors the Life and Legacy of Nancy Metayer on House Floor

In an emotional moment on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) delivered a heartfelt tribute honoring the life and legacy of Nancy Metayer, the Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, whose tragic passing earlier this month has left a profound impact on her community and beyond.

Metayer, 38, a pioneering Haitian-American leader and environmental advocate, was found dead in her home in Coral Springs on April 1 in what authorities described as a domestic violence incident. Her husband has since been charged in connection with her death. The news sent shockwaves throughout South Florida, particularly within the Haitian-American community and political circles, where Metayer was widely respected as a rising force for change.

A trailblazer in every sense, Metayer made history as the first Black woman and first Haitian-American elected to the Coral Springs City Commission. Following her re-election in 2024, she served as Vice Mayor, continuing her work advocating for equity, environmental justice, and inclusive policies.

Beyond her role in local government, Metayer was an accomplished environmental scientist and served as Senior Equity Officer at ICLEI USA. She was also deeply involved in state and national politics, holding leadership roles within the Florida Democratic Party and contributing to outreach efforts for Caribbean communities during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Colleagues and close friends revealed that Metayer was on the verge of announcing a run for Congress—an indication of the growing influence and promise that defined her career—before her life was tragically cut short.

Earlier this month, at a candlelight vigil and celebration of life held in her honor, Rep. Moskowitz—whose district includes Coral Springs—pledged to recognize her legacy on the national stage. Originally scheduled for April 15, his remarks were postponed to allow for a full five-minute tribute on the House floor.

During his speech, Moskowitz highlighted Metayer’s unwavering commitment to public service, her leadership, and the lasting impact she made in her community. He spoke not only of her professional achievements but also of the passion and purpose that guided her work.

In addition to the tribute, Rep. Moskowitz, alongside members of the South Florida congressional delegation, introduced bipartisan legislation to name a post office in South Florida after Nancy Metayer. The initiative aims to create a lasting symbol of her service and dedication to the community she worked tirelessly to uplift.

As tributes continue to pour in, Nancy Metayer is remembered not only as a public servant, but as a visionary leader whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Her impact—rooted in advocacy, representation, and community empowerment—remains deeply felt across South Florida and beyond.
