Her husband has since been charged in connection with her death. A trailblazer in every sense, Metayer made history as the first Black woman and first Haitian-American elected to the Coral Springs City Commission. Following her re-election in 2024, she served as Vice Mayor, continuing her work advocating for equity, environmental justice, and inclusive policies.
Beyond her role in local government, Metayer was an accomplished environmental scientist and served as Senior Equity Officer at ICLEI USA. She was also deeply involved in state and national politics, holding leadership roles within the Florida Democratic Party and contributing to outreach efforts for Caribbean communities during the 2024 presidential campaign.
Colleagues and close friends revealed that Metayer was on the verge of announcing a run for Congress—an indication of the growing influence and promise that defined her career—before her life was tragically cut short.
Earlier this month, at a candlelight vigil and celebration of life held in her honor, Rep. Moskowitz—whose district includes Coral Springs—pledged to recognize her legacy on the national stage. Originally scheduled for April 15, his remarks were postponed to allow for a full five-minute tribute on the House floor.
