Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, a survivor of the de

Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, a survivor of the devastating 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, has died by suicide at the age of 26. His family announced that he passed away on December 15, following a 7-year battle with schizophrenia triggered by the trauma of the Valentine's Day massacre.
Metayer was a senior at the high school on February 14, 2018, when a gunman killed 17 people and injured 17 others. Described by his family as a "radiant child" who was brilliant and academically gifted, with a magnetic humor and warmth that could light up any room, affectionately known as "Donny," he saw his life profoundly altered by the event. The trauma led to withdrawal, depression, guilt, emotional instability, & isolation in the months that followed.
His dreams of attending college and pursuing a career in computer science faded as his mental health deteriorated. Over the years, he faced multiple hospitalizations for suicidal ideation and struggled to accept his diagnosis. In 2021, a severe episode resulted in him being placed under Florida's Baker Act, temporarily barring him from purchasing firearms through a Risk Protection Order.
Donovan found support through treatment at the Henderson Behavioral Health Clinic & with a private psychiatrist. He earned an IT certificate and began working at Office Depot in Coral Springs, where he was quickly promoted and began building independence. However, when his Risk Protection Order lapsed earlier in December, he purchased a handgun from a local shop. A week later, he used it to take his own life in the family home.
In statements shared, Donovan's family expressed profound grief, posting on Facebook and GoFundMe, thanking the community for their overwhelming support. The family added, "The loss of our family's youngest child is a sorrow beyond words. We are choosing to speak Donovan's truth, so that other families do not have to suffer in silence the way we have."
A GoFundMe aims to cover funeral expenses & establish a mental health fund in Donovan's name & support the Henderson Clinic to provide healthcare & housing for people of all ages with behavioral health conditions.

In a decision announced on December 8, Florida Governor #RonDeSantis appointed #PascaleAchille to serve as a judge on the Circuit Court of the 17th Judicial Circuit, covering #BrowardCounty. This appointment fills the vacancy left by the August 15 resignation of Judge Gary M. Farmer Jr.
Judge Achille brings an impressive and well-rounded legal background to the bench. For the past 12 years, she served as an Assistant State Attorney in the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, including her assignment to the demanding Homicide Trial Unit since 2018. Prior to that, she worked in specialized units handling sexual battery cases and career criminal prosecutions, roles that require deep legal knowledge, precision, and a strong sense of ethical responsibility.
Before joining the prosecution team, Achille spent eight years as a civil attorney, managing cases under both federal and Florida state law. During this period, she drafted appellate briefs and argued before the Second and Fifth District Courts of Appeal, gaining valuable expertise in procedure, legal analysis, and courtroom advocacy. This diverse experience spanning prosecution, civil litigation, trial work, and appeals gives the new judge a comprehensive and balanced perspective on the justice system.
A graduate of Florida State University and Nova Southeastern University College of Law, Judge Achille is a longtime resident of Broward County. In her statement following the appointment, she expressed gratitude: “I am truly grateful to the Governor’s Office and the Judicial Nominating Commission for the privilege of serving the people as a circuit court judge. It has been an honor to serve Broward County as an Assistant State Attorney in the Homicide Trial Unit.”
This appointment also carries important symbolic weight for the Haitian-American community in South Florida, which has a significant presence in Broward County. A federal jury in Ft Lauderdale convicted #StephanieDorisca, the former director of nursing at Techni-Pro Institute in Boca Raton, on serious fraud charges related to one of the largest fake nursing credential scandals in U.S. history.
Dorisca, 57, originally from #Haiti, where she began her career as a dental hygienist before immigrating to the U.S. She was found guilty on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud & 5 counts of wire fraud following a 3-day trial that concluded in December. The verdict came after jurors deliberated for less than three hours.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida and court documents, Dorisca conspired with the school's owner & recruiters, primarily from Texas, to sell fraudulent nursing diplomas & transcripts. These false credentials falsely certified that buyers had completed required coursework & mandatory hands-on clinical training, which never occurred.
The scheme involved 954 fake nursing degrees sold at approximately $16,500 each between 2021 & 2022, generating millions of dollars in illicit profits. Prosecutors stated that Dorisca personally received roughly $1.5 million from the fraud. The fraudulent documents enabled purchasers to sit for the national nursing licensure exam (NCLEX), obtain licenses, & secure employment as nurses at healthcare facilities nationwide, posing significant risks to public health and patient safety.
This case falls under #OperationNightingale, a multi-phase federal investigation targeting "diploma mills" in South Florida. Dorisca was charged in September & initially planned to plead guilty to a single conspiracy charge, but withdrew the agreement & opted for trial. Two Texas-based recruiters testified against her, one had pleaded guilty, & the other was expected to do so.
The school's owner, Gilbert Hyppolite, 73, remains awaiting his own trial scheduled for March 2026. Dorisca now faces up to 20 years in federal prison per count. Her sentencing is set for March 5, 2026. The Operation Nightingale has charged more than 40 individuals, with sales of phony diplomas exceeding $220 million & affecting around 15,000 fraudulent credentials. #lunionsuite
