![New White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia has confirmed she never passed the bar exam, even though she has repeatedly referred to herself as a lawyer in public appearances and President Donald Trump described her as an attorney when announcing her appointment.
Zacharia, who graduated from Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law in 2011 with a juris doctor degree, sat for the California bar exam that year but did not pass, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter cited by The Wall Street Journal. She took the exam around the time she was planning a wedding and preparing to move to China with her then-future husband. Zacharia herself acknowledged the failure in an interview with conservative commentator Jack Posobiec after the reports emerged, saying she was distracted by the wedding and move and “didn’t think much” of the results. She added that she did not need to pass to do her work in China.
There is no public record of Zacharia being admitted to the bar in California, Texas, Washington, D.C., or any other U.S. jurisdiction under her married or maiden name (Black). The State Bar of California has stated it has no record of her ever being licensed there and that she never appeared on a California bar exam pass list.
When reporters asked her on the South Lawn earlier this week where she had passed the bar, Zacharia replied, “When I moved to China.” She later told The New York Times that she misheard the question over the noise and thought she was being asked where she went after law school. She has also said she consulted with Pepperdine’s president and others before appearing on cable news and was advised she could call herself a “lawyer” but not an “attorney” or “esquire.”
After law school, Zacharia moved to Beijing and worked from 2011-2013 as an associate on the international-practice team at Zhong Lun. Legal experts note that foreign nationals cannot sit for China’s bar exam or practice Chinese law; such roles for non-citizens are typically limited to supporting cross-border work or consulting. A partner at the firm told the Times the position was likely similar to a paid internship.

![Netflix is giving the internet exactly what it asked for. The streamer has added one of 2026’s most viral stories to its Untold documentary series with Untold: Wide Deceiver, a film that will examine the case of Daejon Love, the man accused of posing as a San Francisco 49ers player to scam women out of money.
According to Netflix and reports from The Hollywood Reporter, the documentary will be told firsthand by the women who say they were deceived, unpacking both the internet nickname “Wide Deceiver” and the darker allegations behind the viral posts. Production is led by Propagate and Stardust Frames in association with North of Now and The Cut, with executive producers including the Way brothers (creators of the Untold series), Ben Silverman, and Howard T. Owens. No director or full cast of participants has been named yet, and a release date remains unannounced.
Love was arrested in August on federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges. Prosecutors allege he and an 18-year-old accomplice, Taylor Jamie Chan, ran a scheme that targeted women primarily through dating apps. Love is accused of presenting himself as a 49ers wide receiver (and at times as a wealthy real estate investor), complete with staged social media videos of him running routes in 49ers gear and a replica helmet. Chan allegedly joined calls posing as Love’s financial advisor to legitimize fake investment opportunities. Authorities have identified at least 26 victims and roughly $1.3 million in alleged losses, with the FBI later noting that dozens more women had come forward.
The case drew massive online attention after Love’s arrest, as videos, photos, and messages of him claiming to be an NFL player spread widely. Love has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is currently set for December 15. The Untold film is expected to center the women’s accounts rather than Love himself.
Untold: Wide Deceiver continues Netflix’s pattern of turning high-profile sports-adjacent scandals into character-driven documentaries. For now, viewers will have to wait for a premiere date.

Katie Zacharia’s brief tenure as White House press secretary ended Friday after only five days on the job, making her the shortest-serving person in the role in modern U.S. history.
President Donald Trump announced Zacharia’s appointment on October 9 as the successor to Karoline Leavitt. She officially began the role on October 12. Her first and only briefing in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room took place the following day and lasted roughly 14–15 minutes. She took a limited number of questions, primarily from conservative-leaning outlets, and the performance drew widespread criticism for its brevity, reliance on prepared remarks, and overall delivery.
Compounding the scrutiny was the revelation about her legal credentials. Zacharia, a 2011 graduate of Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law, had repeatedly described herself as a lawyer and was introduced by Trump as an “attorney.” She later confirmed she sat for the California bar exam in 2011 but did not pass and never became licensed to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction.
The issue intensified after she gave an unclear response when asked where she had passed the bar, and a complaint was filed with the California State Bar Association regarding whether she had improperly held herself out as entitled to practice law.
On Friday, Trump told reporters outside the White House that he had spoken with Zacharia and suggested she “reconsider” the position. He said he told her she did not need the job and expressed concern that she might not be happy in it, while also criticizing the media’s coverage of her. Shortly afterward, White House officials confirmed she was transitioning out of the role. Reports described the move variously as her being let go or fired. It remains unclear whether she will take another position in the administration or Trump’s orbit.
Zacharia’s five-day tenure is shorter than Anthony Scaramucci’s 11-day stint as White House communications director in 2017. The rapid exit returns the White House communications operation to a period of uncertainty ahead of the midterm elections.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Civic Action Pythagore Dumas has announced plans to build two modern stadiums meeting FIFA standards one in the Grand Nord and one in the Grand Sud so Haiti’s national teams can finally host home matches on Haitian soil. The projects are included in the 2026-2027 budget, alongside funding for the rehabilitation of several existing sports parks.
Speaking at a Primature press conference in mid-October 2026, Dumas outlined the dual approach: major new facilities plus upgrades to existing ones. In the South, the planned stadium targets the Parc Larco (also referred to in reports as Parc Land des Gabions) site in Les Cayes. A long-standing land dispute with the Léger family has reportedly been resolved through an agreement in which the family will cede the land to the state, with involvement from Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. Dumas and Director General Wilfince Mombrun conducted inspection visits there in early October; the ministry is advancing a feasibility study, and the vision is for modern construction rather than simple renovation. Les Cayes offers practical advantages, including proximity to Antoine-Simon International Airport.
In the North, the government is advancing a parallel major stadium project. Dumas has referenced available land near Cap-Haïtien and the importance of sites near airports to meet FIFA requirements for access, hotels, and infrastructure. Details on the exact northern site remain less fully documented in public reporting than the Les Cayes plan.
In parallel, the ministry has budget envelopes for rehabilitating several parks that host national championship matches:
- Parc Saint-Victor in Cap-Haïtien
- Parc Levelt n Saint-Marc
- Parc Vincent (Sténio Vincent) in Gonaïves, with a targeted inauguration of January 1, 2027, and earlier reporting of roughly 105 million gourdes allocated
- Parc Serge Bernadel(Miragoâne / Nippes–Grand’Anse area)
- Parc Saint-Joseph
These upgrades aim to improve conditions for clubs and national championship play while the larger stadium projects advance from study to construction phases.

Netflix is cutting nearly 1,000 jobs worldwide, affecting approximately 6% of its workforce, as the streaming giant makes changes to its business amid slowing growth and increasing competition.
The layoffs were announced on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, in an internal email from Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters. Employees working in technology, product development, legal services, and human resources are expected to be among the hardest hit.
The decision marks Netflix's largest round of layoffs since 2022, when the company eliminated hundreds of positions after losing subscribers.
But here's what makes this news interesting: Netflix is still making billions of dollars. The company reported approximately $12.6 billion in revenue and $3.4 billion in profit during the second quarter of 2026. Despite those earnings, Netflix is facing growing pressure to keep viewers engaged as platforms like YouTube, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video compete for people's attention.
Company executives say Netflix remains financially strong and is on track to meet its annual forecast. They explained that the layoffs are part of a larger effort to focus spending and resources on areas that can help the company grow.
Netflix is scheduled to release its third-quarter earnings on October 20, which could provide a clearer picture of how the company is performing.
For nearly 1,000 employees, however, the announcement means facing an uncertain future, even as one of the world's biggest streaming platforms continues to expand its business.

Pope Leo XIV is recovering at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after successful surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his right lung, the Vatican announced.
The 71-year-old pontiff was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma following the procedure on October 13. According to a medical bulletin from his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and lead surgeon Professor Stefano Margaritora, doctors removed the entire lower lobe of the right lung using a video-assisted technique “to ensure the procedure was radical.” The operation lasted about 90 minutes, was completed without complications, and confirmed the cancer diagnosis that preoperative tests had already suspected. The Pope awoke normally and returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor.
Pope Leo first disclosed the discovery of a small, localized nodule during his Angelus address on October 11, saying it had been found at a very early stage during a routine check and that doctors advised surgical removal. He walked into the hospital on Tuesday and greeted well-wishers before the operation.
By Wednesday, the Vatican reported that he had spent a tranquil night, resumed a normal diet, begun walking in his room, and started respiratory physiotherapy. Blood tests and a chest X-ray showed values within the expected range, with recovery “proceeding as planned.” He is expected to remain hospitalized for about a week, and public audiences have been canceled through October 20. Further tests are underway to determine the precise stage and whether additional treatment will be needed. The Vatican has emphasized that the surgery aimed to remove all suspect tissue.

New White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia appeared completely lost for words and visibly fumbling on her first day at the podium Tuesday, reading awkwardly from a script during a brief, heavily scripted debut that drew immediate criticism for its lack of command.
Zacharia, a conservative commentator and former senior communications adviser to Trump Media & Technology Group, succeeded Karoline Leavitt and stepped to the lectern in the James Brady Press Briefing Room for the first time. The entire appearance lasted roughly 14 minutes. She spent most of it looking down at prepared remarks, speaking slowly and stiffly while praising President Trump’s record, midterm campaign efforts, and administration claims. Observers noted she rarely made sustained eye contact and appeared nervous as she worked through the notes.
The performance included a clear verbal stumble. When a reporter asked how she would balance the demanding job with her four children, Zacharia said, “So my president — excuse me, my husband,” before recovering with “That’s a good one.” The moment prompted laughter in the room. She also struggled to answer a question about U.S. intelligence sharing with Ukraine, saying she would have to get back to the reporter. After taking questions from just three outlets — Breitbart, Fox News, and the Daily Mail — she abruptly ended the briefing, telling reporters they could ask Trump their questions as he prepared to leave for a campaign trip to Alaska.
Critics described the debut as amateurish and unprepared. Journalists and commentators highlighted the heavy reliance on notes, the halting delivery, and the early exit. Former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki called it “basically an SNL skit.” Independent journalist Aaron Rupar said Zacharia “makes Karoline Leavitt seem like Winston Churchill.” Other assessments labeled it “brutal,” and “a train wreck.”
President Trump, asked about the briefing before boarding Marine One, said, “I thought she was very good.” White House communications director Steven Cheung called it a “tremendous start” and said she “commanded the room.”

France is pressing for a credible electoral process in Haiti after transitional authorities removed requirements that had made it harder for individuals under sanctions from the European Union, Canada, and the United States, as well as people owing money to the government, to seek office.
The changes came in a third revision of the electoral decree, published in early October 2026 by the office of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. Under the previous rules, candidates had to submit a certificate from the Banque de la République d’Haïti (Haiti’s central bank) confirming they were not insolvent debtors, bankrupt, or barred from using checkbooks. That requirement functioned as a practical barrier for people who had lost access to banking services because of bilateral sanctions. It has been eliminated.
The revised decree also loosens financial standards for future lawmakers and the next president. Candidates no longer need to prove they paid taxes every year for the past five years or show they have no outstanding debt to the national pension fund (ONA). They now only need to demonstrate current tax compliance. Certificates related to debts with the Industrial Development Fund were also dropped.
The decree continues to bar individuals sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council from running for president, Parliament, or local offices. The UN list primarily includes gang leaders, along with one former lawmaker. It does not automatically disqualify those sanctioned only by individual governments or the European Union.
On October 8, French Ambassador Gautier Lekens met with Prime Minister Fils-Aimé. Lekens said he reaffirmed France’s commitment to “a credible electoral process that allows Haitians to freely choose their leaders, with candidates who meet the integrity standards essential for a free and democratic election.” He added that Haiti’s future president “must be able to represent the country with dignity, defend its interests, and act in the best interests of its people both within Haiti and on the international stage.”
