Pierre, who holds Temporary Protected Status (#TPS) and has a pending green card application, was detained during a routine immigration check-in on June 4, 2025, despite having no criminal record.⁠

The detention of Pierre, who entered the U.S. legally in January 2025 under a humanitarian parole program, sparked outrage in the tightly knit Haitian-American community. Pierre was held at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, #NewJersey, where he reportedly endured harsh conditions, including a week of being fed only bread and water. His father, Dutan Pierre, a U.S. citizen, expressed profound distress over his son’s detention.⁠

The release was secured through the joint efforts of Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who coordinated with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to intervene. Lawler personally engaged with DHS officials, including Secretary Kristi Noem, to expedite Pierre’s release.⁠

May 2025 marks 61 years since Haiti officially adopted the black and red flag on May 25, 1964, under the presidency of François “#PapaDoc” #Duvalier. While this version of the flag is often associated with Duvalier's authoritarian regime, its origins stretch further back in Haitian history, to the days of Emperor #JeanJacquesDessalines. 🇭🇹 ⁠

In May 1964, #Duvalier altered the national flag, replacing the familiar blue and red horizontal stripes with vertical black and red bands and removing the traditional coat of arms. This change was part of a broader ideological campaign rooted in noirisme, a philosophy centered on Black identity and Haitian nationalism, though it also served Duvalier’s authoritarian agenda. For Duvalier, the black and red flag symbolized Black empowerment and a rejection of colonial influence.⁠

But this wasn’t the first time #Haiti had flown a black and red banner. In 1805, shortly after Haiti declared independence, Emperor #Dessalines introduced a flag with similar colors during his brief reign. His version also featured vertical black and red stripes, meant to represent the African heritage of Haiti’s people and the bloodshed during the struggle for liberation.⁠

Though the designs and political motivations behind the flags of 1805 and 1964 differed, the symbolism of Black resilience and revolutionary sacrifice remains a common thread. The black and red flag evokes both pride and controversy, tied to Haiti’s revolutionary spirit and Duvalier’s divisive legacy. After the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier, Haiti reinstated the blue and red flag on February 17, 1986, which remains in use today.⁠
