A night of homecoming celebrations near Florida A&M University (FAMU) in Tallahassee turned into a frightening scene Saturday, October 24, when gunfire erupted near Bragg Memorial Stadium, leaving 12 people injured, including six children.
According to the Tallahassee Police Department, 11 people suffered gunshot wounds, while another person was injured while trying to escape the violence.
The shooting happened shortly before 8 p.m. near the intersection of Perry and Manatee streets, approximately two hours after FAMU’s homecoming football game against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
The incident has raised concerns about public safety during one of the university’s biggest weekends of the year, when thousands of students, alumni and families gather in Tallahassee to celebrate.
Six Children Among the Injured
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell provided details about the shooting during a news conference shortly after midnight.
Authorities reported that six of the injured victims were adults and six were juveniles, with the youngest just 11 years old.
Three victims suffered serious injuries, while one was reported to be in critical condition.
Police also said one of the victims is believed to be a Florida A&M student, while another is a grandmother.
Officials have not publicly identified the victims, and investigators have not released additional details about their conditions.
The presence of children among those injured has added to the concern surrounding the shooting, particularly because homecoming events attract families and visitors of all ages.
Police Believe a Fight Happened Before the Shooting
Investigators believe a physical altercation involving several people occurred shortly before the gunfire began.
However, authorities have not confirmed what started the confrontation or who fired the shots.
Police have also not established whether the shooting was directly connected to FAMU’s homecoming football game.
Although the incident occurred near Bragg Memorial Stadium, officials have not said that the violence began inside the stadium or during the game.
As of the initial reports late Saturday, no arrests had been announced.
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
FAMU Issues Emergency Alert
As police responded to the scene, Florida A&M University sent an emergency notification warning people near Bragg Memorial Stadium and Perry Street to avoid the area or shelter in place.
The alert came as officers worked to secure the surrounding streets and assist those who had been injured.
The university later released a statement expressing concern for the victims and everyone affected by the incident.
FAMU also encouraged anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Tallahassee Police Department.
Shooting Shakes Homecoming Weekend
Florida A&M University is one of the country’s historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), with a long history of academic achievement, cultural traditions and community involvement.
Its annual homecoming celebration is one of the most anticipated events on campus, bringing together current students, graduates, families and supporters from across the country.
For many attendees, homecoming is an opportunity to reconnect with friends, celebrate school pride and take part in events that have become part of the university’s tradition.
Saturday’s shooting brought an unexpected moment of fear to a weekend that is usually filled with celebrations.
Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey also responded publicly to the incident, expressing concern for the victims and the FAMU community.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Police are continuing to investigate the shooting and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.
Authorities have not announced a confirmed motive or identified any suspects in the initial reports.
The conditions of the injured victims, particularly those who suffered serious or critical injuries, remain an important concern.
The shooting also raises broader questions about public safety during large community gatherings, especially events that attract students, children and families.
For now, the focus remains on the recovery of those injured and the investigation into what led to the violence.
Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the Tallahassee Police Department.
