El Salvador has reportedly increased its military presence in Haiti to 450 personnel as the search continues for four Salvadoran aviation technicians who disappeared following an armed gang attack in Croix-des-Bouquets earlier this month.
According to Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste, the number of Salvadoran military personnel stationed in Haiti reached 450 on Friday evening, October 23, 2026, following the arrival of another aircraft carrying 100 soldiers.
The additional troops are expected to strengthen ongoing search and security operations alongside the international Gang Suppression Force (GSF) and the Haitian National Police (PNH).
The deployment comes as authorities continue trying to locate four Salvadoran personnel whose whereabouts remain unknown following a violent ambush on October 18.
Four Salvadoran Technicians Disappeared Following Gang Attack
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 18, in the Santo area of Croix-des-Bouquets, northeast of Port-au-Prince.
The four Salvadoran aviation technicians were serving with the international security mission when their armored vehicle reportedly came under attack while returning to their base.
According to accounts attributed to Salvadoran authorities, armed attackers opened fire and used explosives, causing the vehicle to catch fire.
The four men reportedly managed to escape the burning vehicle, but communication with them was lost as fighting continued in the area.
Their disappearance has raised serious concerns about the safety of international personnel working in Haiti, particularly those traveling through communities where armed gangs maintain a strong presence.
Although Salvadoran officials have described the men as being held hostage, their exact location and condition have not been independently confirmed.
President Nayib Bukele Announces Military Rescue Operation
Following the attack, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele announced that his government had launched a military operation to recover the missing personnel.
In a message posted on X in Haitian Creole, Bukele addressed the armed groups he believes are responsible for the disappearance.
He explained that the four men were aviation technicians whose primary responsibilities included medical evacuations and helping save lives, rather than participating in direct combat operations.
Bukele made clear that his government’s immediate goal was to bring all four Salvadorans home alive and unharmed.
He also warned that armed groups could face a stronger military response if the men were not released safely.
The Salvadoran president’s statements came as concerns grew over the risks facing foreign personnel assigned to Haiti’s international security mission.
Additional Troops Arrive as Search Operations Intensify
According to Le Nouvelliste, the latest arrival of 100 Salvadoran soldiers on October 23 brought the country’s reported military presence in Haiti to 450 personnel.
The newspaper attributed the figure to a source familiar with the deployment.
The reinforcements are expected to support search operations across the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac, an area that includes Croix-des-Bouquets and several communities affected by gang violence.
The Gang Suppression Force has also acknowledged the arrival of Salvadoran reinforcements to support security operations alongside Haitian authorities.
However, the reported total of 450 personnel has not been independently confirmed through a publicly released official troop count.
Haiti’s Government Makes Recovery a Priority
Haitian authorities have described the recovery of the four missing Salvadorans as an urgent priority.
Following the attack, the government announced that senior security officials had met to review ongoing operations and determine additional measures needed to strengthen the response.
Officials emphasized that efforts to locate the missing personnel would continue in coordination with international security partners.
The government also stressed the importance of protecting civilians as operations continue in areas affected by armed violence.
The incident comes at a difficult moment for Haiti, where armed gangs continue to challenge security forces and disrupt daily life in several communities.
What the Deployment Means for Haiti’s Security Mission
The Gang Suppression Force is a multinational security mission authorized by the United Nations Security Council to support Haitian authorities in confronting armed gangs.
The force works alongside the Haitian National Police as part of broader efforts to restore security, protect civilians and help the government regain control of areas affected by gang activity.
El Salvador is among the countries contributing personnel to the international effort.
The disappearance of the four aviation technicians highlights the dangers facing the mission, including personnel assigned to transportation, medical evacuation and other support operations.
It also raises concerns about the ability of security forces to move safely through areas where gangs remain heavily armed.
Search Continues as Questions Remain
As of the October 23 reports, the four Salvadoran technicians had not been publicly confirmed rescued, and their condition remained unknown.
No armed group had publicly claimed responsibility for the reported ambush.
The arrival of additional Salvadoran personnel signals a stronger response from El Salvador as authorities continue efforts to locate the missing men.
For Haiti, the situation is another reminder of the challenges facing the country’s security forces and their international partners.
While the search continues, the immediate priority remains bringing the four Salvadorans home safely and protecting civilians in communities affected by ongoing violence.
This is a developing story. Details may change as Haitian and Salvadoran authorities release additional information.
