At least 30 people, including several children as young as 12, were killed on Saturday in a tragic stampede at the Citadelle Laferrière, Haiti’s historic mountaintop fortress, after heavy rains triggered panic during an unauthorized gathering promoted on TikTok.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. at the main entrance to the 19th-century fortress in the northern town of Milot. The event, advertised online as “Citadel Vibes 3.0,” drew a large crowd of young people despite not being authorized by local authorities.
Heavy downpours caused sudden panic among the attendees, leading to a deadly surge. Victims were crushed, trampled, or asphyxiated, particularly at the narrow fortress gates where people trying to enter collided with those attempting to flee. Milot Mayor Wesner Joseph told the Miami Herald that “the majority of them died by asphyxiation.”
The Citadelle Laferrière, also known as Citadelle Henri, is the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere. Built between 1805 and 1820 by tens of thousands of formerly enslaved Haitians under the leadership of revolutionary Henri Christophe, it stands as a powerful symbol of Haiti’s independence and resistance against colonial invasion.
The tragedy has deeply shocked the nation and the Haitian diaspora worldwide.
Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé confirmed the deaths and stated that the government is mobilizing the Ministry of Health to support victims’ families and assist with the investigation. Nord Department head Jean Henri Petit warned that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue and more bodies are recovered.
Milot’s limited emergency infrastructure severely hampered the immediate response. The town has no ambulance service and only one police vehicle serving its 13 officers. Justices of the peace had to travel from nearby Cap-Haïtien to help process the scene.
All visits to the Citadelle Laferrière have been suspended until further notice.
As of Sunday morning, authorities had not yet released the full list of victims’ names or a final confirmed casualty count. An official investigation has been launched to determine exactly how the unauthorized event was organized and why safety measures were not in place.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the dangers of large, unregulated gatherings at historic and culturally significant sites, especially in areas with limited emergency resources.
