Chokarella founder reunited with family following dropped domestic battery charges and immigration hearing
Miami, FL – February 28, 2026 Haitian journalist, influencer, and founder of Chokarella, Carel Pedre, was released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody late Friday evening, February 27, 2026, following a court hearing earlier that day in which a judge approved his release on bail. He has since been reunited with his family.
Pedre’s detention began after his initial arrest on December 21, 2025, in Tamarac, Broward County, Florida, on allegations of domestic battery. Florida prosecutors declined to pursue the criminal charges in late January 2026, entering a “decline to prosecute” decision in Broward County court records. An affidavit from the alleged victim requested no further prosecution and denied key details in the police report.
This resolution lifted all related bond conditions from the domestic violence case and led to the return of the $1,000 cash bond Pedre had posted. Despite the state matter being dropped, Pedre remained in ICE custody at the Krome Detention Center due to an immigration detainer placed following his arrest. Sources indicate the detention stemmed from alleged immigration status issues, such as a possible visa overstay after entering the U.S. in early 2025.
Chokarella issued an official public notice on February 27 confirming the development:
“Chokarella is pleased to inform the public that Carel Pedre is no longer in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and has been reunited with his family.”
The statement expressed gratitude to supporters while stressing privacy and the value of due process. The Haitian diaspora, media colleagues, and fans expressed widespread relief on social media, celebrating the news as a positive outcome after months of concern and advocacy.
Pedre has not yet issued a personal public statement since his release. His team has requested respect and space for him during this time of recovery.
L’Union Suite extends sincere congratulations to Carel Pedre and his loved ones on this long-awaited reunion. We continue to stand with Haitian journalists, creators, and community leaders who face challenges both at home and abroad.
Welcome home, Carel.
