Haiti’s New Ambassador to the U.S. Officially Presented to President Trump at White House Ceremony

On Wednesday, June 11, His Excellency Lionel Delatour, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Haiti to the United States, officially presented his letters of credence to U.S. President Donald Trump in a formal ceremony at the White House in Washington, D.C.

This ceremonial tradition, known as the presentation of credentials, marks the formal beginning of an ambassador’s diplomatic mission in a host country. During the ceremony, the ambassador delivers a letter from the president of their home nation confirming their appointment and requesting official recognition as the country’s diplomatic representative. Only after this moment is the ambassador granted full diplomatic status.

The Embassy of Haiti in Washington, D.C. later shared official photos of the ceremony on its social media platforms, marking the event as both symbolic and significant for Haiti’s diplomatic presence in the U.S.

Ambassador Delatour was appointed by presidential decree on March 12, 2025, and brings with him a wealth of experience in diplomacy, international relations, and public policy. A graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, he has long been a respected voice in Caribbean policy circles.

Over the years, he has contributed to major economic and trade initiatives such as the HOPE/HELP Acts and the Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act, both of which have had meaningful impact on Haiti’s development and trade relations.

As Ambassador Delatour steps into his new role in Washington, he is expected to advocate for Haiti’s strategic interests, foster deeper U.S.–Haiti cooperation, and engage more closely with the Haitian diaspora across America.
