U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is on pace to record its highest monthly arrest total since President Donald Trump returned to office, as the administration intensifies its immigration enforcement efforts across the country.
According to internal ICE detention data reviewed by The Washington Post, the agency averaged more than 1,400 arrests per day during the first 12 days of July. Officials also reported that ICE surpassed 2,000 arrests in a single day multiple times this month, putting July on track to become the busiest month for immigration arrests during Trump’s second term.
The increase follows a record-setting June, when ICE detained more than 39,500 people, the highest monthly total recorded by the administration. If the current pace continues, July is expected to surpass that figure.
The surge comes as President Trump continues to prioritize stricter immigration enforcement and has repeatedly pledged to increase deportations nationwide as part of his broader immigration agenda. Administration officials say the increased arrests are aimed at enforcing federal immigration laws and removing individuals who are in the country without legal authorization.
At the same time, ICE has faced growing public scrutiny following several recent enforcement operations that turned deadly. In separate incidents over the past week, ICE agents were involved in fatal shootings in Texas and Maine, while another man died in Florida after being struck by a truck while fleeing federal immigration agents. The incidents remain under investigation.
The rise in arrests has fueled a national debate over immigration enforcement. Supporters argue the administration is strengthening border security and enforcing existing laws, while critics say the sharp increase raises concerns about due process, community trust, and the impact on immigrant families.
With deportation efforts continuing to expand, immigration advocates, local officials, and affected communities are closely watching how the administration’s enforcement strategy will unfold in the months ahead.
