The hotel, a beloved landmark that inspired literature, hosted global icons like #MickJagger and Jacqueline Onassis, and survived decades of political turmoil, was confirmed destroyed by its manager, #RichardMorse, in a statement on X on Monday.
The attack began late Saturday, July 5, in the Pacot neighborhood where the hotel is located. James Jean-Louis, a resident living above the Oloffson, reported to The Associated Press that he witnessed flames as he and others fled amid heavy gunfire between police and gang members.
The Oloffson, originally built in 1886 as a private residence by Simon Sam, served as a presidential summer palace in the early 1900s, a U.S. Marine Corps hospital, and later a hotel under a Swedish sea captain in the 1930s. The hotel’s destruction follows a pattern of escalating gang violence in #Haiti. Recent attacks have targeted other landmarks, including Radio Télévision Caraïbes and the State University Hospital of Haiti. Journalists are currently unable to access the site to verify the extent of the damage due to gang control of the area, but Patrick Durandis of the Institute for Safeguarding National Heritage also confirmed the fire.
