Neymar Retires From Brazil Duty After Heartbreaking World Cup Exit to Norway

Brazilian football icon Neymar has officially called time on his international career, ending a 16-year journey with the Seleção after Brazil’s dramatic elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 34-year-old announced his retirement following Brazil’s 2-1 loss to Norway in the Round of 16 on July 5 at MetLife Stadium. The defeat brought an emotional end to Brazil’s pursuit of a sixth World Cup title and closed one of the most closely watched chapters in modern football.

Neymar entered the match as a second-half substitute and converted a stoppage-time penalty, but Brazil could not complete the comeback. Erling Haaland scored twice for Norway, sealing a result that sent Brazil out of the tournament and Norway into the next round.

After the final whistle, Neymar was visibly emotional as teammates gathered around him. He then confirmed that his time representing Brazil had come to an end.

“I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished it here. It is now over,” Neymar said.

The location made the farewell even more meaningful. Neymar made his senior Brazil debut in 2010 at the same stadium, scoring against the United States. Sixteen years later, his international career ended on the same field.

He leaves the national team as Brazil’s all-time leading men’s scorer, with 80 goals in 130 appearances, according to current post-match reporting. His career with the Seleção stretched across four World Cups and included years of spectacular goals, major expectations, painful injuries and unforgettable moments.

Brazil’s defeat also marked the country’s earliest World Cup exit in decades, adding another layer of shock to a night already filled with emotion.

For many Haitian football fans, Neymar’s farewell carries its own emotional weight. Brazil has long held a special place in Haitian football culture, with generations of supporters growing up cheering for the Seleção and stars such as Pelé, Ronaldo Nazário and Neymar.

That connection felt especially different in 2026. Haiti returned to the World Cup stage after 52 years, giving Haitian fans their own national team to celebrate while many still carried a deep love for Brazilian football.

Neymar leaves without the World Cup trophy that followed him throughout much of his career, but his place in Brazilian football history is secure. From his creativity and flair to his record-breaking goals, he became the face of a generation.

For Haitian fans who grew up watching him, debating him and celebrating his biggest moments, the final whistle felt like more than the end of one match.

It felt like the end of an era.
