Bahamas Deports 107 Haitian Migrants Days After Prime Minister Philip Davis’ Re-Election

Just days after Prime Minister Philip Davis and the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) won a second consecutive term in the May 12 general election, Bahamian authorities deported 107 undocumented Haitian migrants back to Haiti.

The group, which included 22 women and five minors, was repatriated on Friday, May 15, 2026, via a Bahamasair flight to Cap-Haïtien.

The swift operation highlights the Bahamian government’s continued commitment to strict immigration enforcement amid persistent regional migration pressures.

Haitians continue to flee one of the most severe humanitarian and security crises in the Western Hemisphere. More than 1.4 million people are internally displaced, while millions face acute hunger and the collapse of basic services.

Although the May 12 snap election in The Bahamas focused primarily on domestic issues such as the cost of living, immigration — particularly from Haiti — remained a sensitive underlying issue.

Prime Minister Davis has consistently maintained a firm stance on migration, often stating that “The Bahamas is for Bahamians.” His administration has defended regular deportations despite calls from international organizations to pause returns due to dangerous conditions in Haiti.

Haitian migrants represent the largest group of irregular migrants in The Bahamas. They frequently encounter challenges including integration difficulties, employment discrimination, and periodic enforcement sweeps.

While human rights groups have criticized the deportations, citing safety concerns upon return to Haiti, public sentiment in The Bahamas largely supports strong border controls due to strained local resources.

With the PLP’s re-election, analysts expect this hardline immigration policy to continue throughout the new term.
