Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé was received this Saturday morning by Pope Leo XIV in a warm private audience at the Vatican.
The meeting focused on Haiti’s current socio-political situation, ongoing security and humanitarian challenges, migration issues, and the important role of the Catholic Church in supporting the Haitian people during this difficult period. Both sides expressed appreciation for the strong and longstanding diplomatic relations between Haiti and the Holy See, while emphasizing the need for continued international support for the country.
During the audience, Prime Minister Fils-Aimé presented Pope Leo XIV with an official jersey of the Haitian national football team, Les Grenadiers. The symbolic gift represents Haitian identity, pride, national unity, and resilience, especially as Haiti prepares for its return to the FIFA World Cup in 2026, the first time since 1974.
Following the audience, the Prime Minister held talks with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher. He also officially inaugurated Haiti’s new embassy to the Holy See.
This high-level visit underscores Haiti’s efforts to strengthen international alliances and diplomatic ties as the country navigates its complex challenges, while proudly showcasing its culture and football heritage on the global stage.
