Meta has officially discontinued end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Instagram Direct Messages, a feature that previously allowed users to send private messages that only the sender and recipient could read.
The change took effect on May 8, 2026. The optional E2EE feature, which was introduced in 2023, was never enabled by default and saw very low adoption among users. With the removal, all Instagram DMs now use standard encryption, meaning Meta can access the content of messages for moderation, safety, advertising, and other purposes.
This decision is expected to raise privacy concerns among users who relied on the extra layer of protection for sensitive conversations.
Meta has stated that users who want full end-to-end encryption should use WhatsApp, which remains fully encrypted by default.
Why It Matters
- End-to-end encryption prevented Meta, hackers, and third parties from reading message content.
- The removal gives Meta greater visibility into private chats on Instagram.
- Privacy advocates have criticized the move, arguing it weakens user privacy in favor of easier content moderation.
As of May 10, 2026, the end-to-end encryption option is no longer available for Instagram users worldwide.
