Marly Metayer, the mother of the late Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer, has officially filed to run for her daughter’s vacant Seat 3 on the Coral Springs City Commission.
Nancy Metayer, 38, made history in 2020 as the first Haitian-American and first Black woman elected to the Coral Springs City Commission. She was reelected in 2024 and served as Vice Mayor until her tragic death. Her body was discovered in her home on April 1, 2026, after police conducted a wellness check. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, has been indicted by a grand jury on first-degree murder and tampering with evidence charges. He has pleaded not guilty.
Marly Metayer, a registered nurse with over 35 years of experience, was born in Haiti and immigrated to the United States at the age of 13. She graduated from Dillard High School and has resided in Coral Springs since 1999, where she raised four children, including Nancy. This marks her first bid for public office.
According to her campaign manager, David Metellus — who also managed Nancy Metayer’s successful campaigns. Marly is running to continue the important work her daughter started.
“She really felt like she wanted to continue the work that Nancy was doing,” Metellus said. “She taught her kids to never leave a job undone.”
Metellus added that Marly plans to focus on earning the community’s trust through service and hard work. She brings a strong background in healthcare and a deep personal commitment to issues affecting families. Marly intends to continue Nancy’s priorities in environmental justice, public safety, economic mobility, and community resilience, while placing special emphasis on mental and behavioral health — an issue that is deeply personal to the family after the loss of her son Donovan months before Nancy’s death.
Five candidates, including Marly Metayer, have filed for the open Seat 3. If multiple candidates qualify, voters will decide the race in the general election on November 3, 2026. The winner will serve the remainder of the two-year term.
