Martine Guerrier, the former ”Chief Family Engagement Officer” for the Department of Education who went on to work with then-Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott whose grandparents immigrated from the Caribbean , appears to be formally throwing her hat in the ring for Brooklyn Assembly seat by filing necessary campaign paperwork this month. By registering a campaign, Ms. Guerrier is able to raise and spend essential campaign funds as part of her quest for public office.
The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature. The Assembly is composed of 150 members representing an equal number of districts, with each district having an average population of 128,652. Assembly members serve two-year terms without term limits. The Assembly convenes at the State Capitol in Albany.
She joins two other candidates in seeking the Democratic nomination for the seat: District Leaders Walter Mosley and Ola Alabi, both of whom have also filed registered committees and are actively campaigning.
Ms. Guerrier, whom The New York Times labeled a “Haitian-American soccer mom,” is an educational policy expert who, prior to becoming “Chief Mom,” previously worked as the communications director and legislative representative for a public school advocacy group in Albany.
In 2007 faced with mounting criticism from parents over recent changes in school bus routes and plans to reorganize the city school system, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg named a veteran education advocate to represent them at the Department of Education. Martine G. Guerrier, who was 36, received the title of chief family engagement officer.
