Haitian-American Gymnast Fred Richard Wins Prestigious Nissen-Emery Award and Claims Third NCAA All-Around National Title

University of Michigan senior Fred Richard, one of the most decorated Haitian-American athletes in collegiate gymnastics, capped his legendary career in spectacular fashion by winning the 2026 Nissen-Emery Award, the highest individual honor in men’s collegiate gymnastics.

The College Gymnastics Association announced the award on April 16, recognizing Richard as the nation’s outstanding senior male gymnast for his exceptional athletic achievement, sportsmanship, leadership, academics, and character. He becomes just the fourth Michigan Wolverine to receive this prestigious honor.

Richard dominated the 2026 season. He was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year for the second time in his career and captured his fourth Big Ten all-around individual title — making him only the second gymnast in conference history to achieve that feat, alongside Minnesota’s John Roethlisberger. He was also named Gymnast of the Championships for the fourth consecutive year.

On the team side, Richard played a pivotal role in leading the Wolverines to their sixth straight Big Ten team championship on April 4 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Just days later, at the 2026 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships in Champaign, Illinois, Richard delivered one of the finest performances of his career. He won his second straight — and third overall — NCAA all-around national title with a season-high score of 83.598, finishing nearly five points ahead of his closest competitor. With this victory, Richard joins an elite group as one of only a handful of male gymnasts in NCAA history to win three all-around national titles.

Although the defending national champion Michigan team finished third overall behind Stanford and Oklahoma, Richard’s individual brilliance shone brightly throughout the competition.

A Historic Career

Richard’s senior season added another chapter to an already remarkable résumé that includes:

  • Helping Michigan win its seventh NCAA team title in 2025
  • Contributing to Team USA’s bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics
  • Earning 14 career All-America honors

Michigan’s men’s gymnastics program celebrated the achievement with a powerful message:

“Never a doubt 😤 Congrats to Fred Richard for being named the 2026 Nissen-Emery Award winner!”

As a Haitian-American athlete, Fred Richard has become a powerful symbol of excellence, resilience, and representation in a sport that has historically lacked diversity. His success continues to inspire young gymnasts across the Haitian diaspora and beyond.

With his collegiate career now complete, all eyes are on what the future holds for one of America’s most accomplished gymnasts as he transitions toward professional and international competition.
