Port-au-Prince, August 7, 2025 — Haitian businessman Laurent Saint-Cyr has officially taken office as the new president of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), succeeding economist Fritz Alphonse Jean. In a formal ceremony held at the Villa d’Accueil in Port-au-Prince, Saint-Cyr became the fourth leader to hold the rotating presidency since the council’s inception in April 2024.

Saint-Cyr underscored the private sector’s importance as “the engine of the country’s economy” while pledging to work for the benefit of all Haitians.
His appointment, however, comes amid heightened tension. Just hours before the ceremony, Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier — leader of the Viv Ansanm gang coalition that controls 90% of Port-au-Prince — issued threats to derail the political transition and overthrow the government, with bursts of gunfire reported in parts of the capital.
The CPT also faces internal criticism, including allegations of corruption involving three members and growing concerns over the concentration of political influence among Haiti’s economic elite.
