The Port St. Lucie High School football team is playing without one of its most respected seniors. Emmanuel Nelson, an 18-year-old Jaguars defensive standout and wrestler, remains in ICE custody after a traffic stop last week revealed his work permits had expired.⁠ ⁠ Nelson was pulled over the morning of Aug. 19 while driving to school. Police said he was traveling 45 mph in a 20-mph school zone on Southeast Lennard Road. He received a citation. When the officer ran his license, records showed he is not a U.S. citizen and that his employment authorization documents had lapsed. Because he was a documented non-citizen, the officer contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which placed a detainer on him. He was booked into St. Lucie County Jail that afternoon.⁠ ⁠ ICE said Nelson legally entered the United States on Jan. 16, 2016, through the Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program but “failed to comply with the terms of his admission” and is now in violation of immigration law. He remains in custody pending removal proceedings. A family spokesperson said a U.S. citizen step-parent has petitioned for him and that the paperwork for permanent residency was submitted; those cases can take years. A second Haitian pastor has been arrested by immigration officials in Springfield after the U.S. Supreme Court allowed President Donald Trump to end Temporary Protected Status for Haitian refugees. Central Christian Church Senior Pastor Carl Ruby said there are now two pastors in Springfield detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The latest arrest comes as ICE has been fitting Haitian immigrants in the city with ankle bracelets amid a broader enforcement push in a community that became a national flashpoint during Trump’s 2024 campaign. Springfield, a city of about 60,000, is home to an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 Haitian residents. Many lived and worked legally under TPS until those protections expired after the high court ruling. ICE has since ramped up detentions, reporting orders, and electronic monitoring that restricts travel. The first pastor taken into custody is Gilbert Joubert Adrien, 41. ICE detained him on Aug. 20 at a Sunoco station on South Limestone Street while he was a passenger in a car. Haitian man Victor Yonel was also taken; two women in the vehicle, including Yonel’s wife, were released. Adrien was held at Butler County Jail. Adrien is a husband and father of two children, ages 15 and 7. He has lived in the United States for five years. Faith leaders say he has no criminal history, no prior immigration detention, no final order of removal, and has not lived in Haiti for more than 20 years. A second Haitian pastor was detained on Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon, Ruby said, that pastor had already been transferred to a detention facility out of state and “may be deported within hours or days.” His name has not been released publicly. The Trump administration has temporarily paused immigrant visa appointments at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide as the State Department trains consular officers on new guidance for evaluating whether applicants could become dependent on U.S. public benefits.⁠ ⁠ The State Department said the global training program is designed to make sure consular officers can evaluate immigrant visa applicants more closely and consistently under the existing “public charge” rules. Haitian businessman Dimitri Vorbe has been released from U.S. immigration custody after nearly 11 months in detention, bringing a major development in his long-running immigration case.⁠ ⁠ Vorbe was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at his South Florida home on September 23, 2025, and had remained in detention while the U.S. government pursued removal proceedings against him.⁠ ⁠ His release comes after U.S. District Judge Darrin P.
