Pras Michel, the Grammy-winning rapper and founding member of the iconic hip-hop group The Fugees, reported to federal prison on Thursday, April 30, to begin serving a 14-year sentence.
The 53-year-old artist turned himself in at the Federal Correctional Institution in Safford, Arizona, as ordered by the court after multiple delays to his surrender date.
Michel’s spokesperson, Erica Dumas, released a statement on his behalf:
“Today is a painful day for Pras, for his family, and for everyone who believes in a fair system of justice. Pras honors the legal process as he reports to begin his sentence. The Foreign Agents Registration Act-related charges that led to his conviction are being vigorously contested on appeal, and his legal team believes the record will show that his rights were violated and the truth was obscured. This chapter is difficult, but it is not his final one.”
Michel was convicted in 2023 on 10 felony counts following a high-profile federal trial. Prosecutors alleged he played a central role in an international scheme connected to Malaysian financier Jho Low and the massive 1MDB corruption scandal.
According to court documents, Michel helped funnel more than $865,000 in illegal foreign contributions into Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign. He was also found guilty of acting as an unregistered foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), money laundering, conspiracy, making false statements, and witness tampering.
The charges included efforts to influence U.S. officials and investigations involving both Jho Low and the Chinese telecom company ZTE.
In November 2025, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly sentenced Michel to 14 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered the forfeiture of tens of millions of dollars.
Michel’s legal team has consistently maintained that he was unaware of the full scope of the alleged scheme and that his constitutional rights were violated during the investigation and trial. His attorneys say the appeal process will continue while he is incarcerated.
Pras Michel rose to global fame in the mid-1990s as a member of The Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. The group’s groundbreaking album The Score (1996) won two Grammy Awards and is considered one of the most influential hip-hop albums of all time.
This latest development marks a dramatic fall from grace for one of hip-hop’s most celebrated figures.
This story is developing as Michel’s legal team prepares to move forward with the appeal.
