Some Haitian Immigrants Report ICE Check-Ins and Electronic Monitoring After TPS Ends

As immigration enforcement increases following the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, some Haitian immigrants say they are being required to report to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices for mandatory check-ins. According to immigration attorneys and community advocates, some individuals who attended those appointments have also been fitted with electronic ankle monitors through ICE’s Alternatives to Detention (ATD) program.

The reports come just days after TPS protections officially ended for hundreds of thousands of Haitians living in the United States. While the expiration of TPS does not automatically result in deportation, individuals who no longer have another lawful immigration status may become subject to immigration enforcement and removal proceedings.

Attorneys representing affected families say some former TPS holders have received notices directing them to appear at local ICE offices. Legal experts warn that missing a scheduled check-in or refusing court-ordered electronic monitoring could increase the risk of detention while immigration cases are pending.

Community organizations say the increased enforcement has created fear and uncertainty, particularly among Haitian families who have lived, worked, and raised children in the United States for many years. At the same time, immigration lawyers emphasize that not everyone who lost TPS is receiving these notices, and each case depends on an individual’s immigration history and legal status.

Advocates are encouraging anyone who receives a notice from ICE to seek advice from a qualified immigration attorney or accredited legal representative before attending an appointment. They also stress the importance of complying with official immigration notices while exploring any available legal options to remain in the United States.
